Key terms and definitions used throughout Fluent.
Fluent terminology
This glossary covers the most common terms you’ll encounter while using Fluent.
A
Appointment A scheduled interpreting session. Appointments can be in-person, phone (OPI), or video (VRI).
Assignment The act of designating a specific interpreter to cover an appointment. An assignment can be direct (manually selected) or offer-based (interpreter accepts from a pool).
Availability Time slots when an interpreter is free to accept work. Interpreters can set recurring availability or block specific times.

Confirmation An interpreter’s acknowledgment that they will attend a scheduled appointment. Confirmations can be requested automatically or manually.
Confirmation request A notification sent to an interpreter asking them to confirm their assignment. These are typically sent at configurable times before the appointment.
Customer The end client requesting interpreter services. In Fluent, customers are often the locations or departments where appointments take place.
I
Interpreter A language professional who provides interpretation services. In Fluent, interpreters have profiles with their languages, credentials, and availability.
L
Language pair The combination of source and target languages for an interpretation. For example, Spanish to English.
Location A physical address where in-person appointments take place. Locations belong to customers and can include special instructions.
LSP (Language Service Provider) An agency that coordinates interpreter services. LSPs use Fluent to manage interpreters, customers, and appointments.
O
Offer A notification sent to one or more interpreters about an available appointment. Interpreters can accept or decline offers.
Offer-based scheduling A workflow where appointments are broadcast to qualified interpreters who can claim them on a first-come, first-served basis.
OPI (Over-the-Phone Interpretation) Interpretation conducted via telephone.
P
Pending confirmation An assignment status indicating the interpreter has been assigned but hasn’t yet confirmed they’ll attend.
R
Rate package A set of billing and pay rates that can be applied to customers or interpreters. Rate packages define hourly rates, minimums, travel pay, and other billing rules.
S
Service type The modality of interpretation: in-person, phone (OPI), or video (VRI).
Status The current state of an appointment (e.g., Requested, Assigned, Confirmed, In Progress, Complete, Canceled).
V
Voucher A time record submitted by an interpreter for a completed appointment. Vouchers capture start time, end time, and can include signatures.
VRI (Video Remote Interpretation) Interpretation conducted via video conference.
W
Workspace Your organization’s Fluent environment, including all users, interpreters, customers, and data.
